The Making a Difference “EMS Grand Rounds†Class will be held on April 6, 2011 at 6 PM. This Class will be held at the Training Center on Sunset Ave. Come and see how YOU the “Provider†can make a positive difference in someone’s life both at work and at home. This class is for both Experienced and new providers. This class will include a lecture and a round table discussion. You will receive 1.5 hours of CME credit for BLS and ALS. Registration will be closed at noon on April 5, 2011. Register at the “Class List and Reg†tab at the top of the page.
Your Midstate Banquet committee met last week and the plans for this years banquet are coming together. This year is shaping up to be a great event . As the count down clock shows time is running out to get your nominations in. This year’s DJ will be our very own Paramedic / Dispatcher Steve Ingersol. Something else we would like to do this year is put together a collection of EMS photos. We have a few but need lots more. So send us your photos. Anything EMS related . Show us your providers ,show us your quarters,your rigs,your agency in action doing training or just showing off. The more the better.E mail them to us at Midstate. Stay well !

EMS Child Case review April 20, 2011
Once the patient is in the ER “our job is doneâ€, what happens next? Sue Cooper, Family Life Specialist at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, will walk us through 2 separate and very different Pediatric cases from an EMS perspective. Sue will also review development and EMS approach to pediatric patients. EMS Provider Child Abuse/Neglect and mandatory reporting will conclude the program. CME hours 3 BLS
Catching zero pharmacology safety May 4, 2011
Medication mistakes and “near misses†Tonight watch the story of medication errors and how they impact not only the patient but the provider, agency and community. The Faxton St. Luke’s Pharmacy team will present this thought provoking presentation and will include a review and discussion of current medication safety practices. CME hours 3 ALS or BLS
Current Stroke practice: May 18, 2011
This program will provide the Pre-Hospital provider with an in-depth look at: current Stroke Care, Prevention, Signs and Symptoms, Pre-Hospital Care, Emergency Dept and Hospital Care. A question and answer session lead by Stroke Center Coordinator Angela Roach will complete this 3 hour Program. CME hours 1.5 BLS 1.5 ALS
Air medical flight school June 1, 2011
Mercy Flight Central will review and train attendees on the latest Air Medical issues. This program will include establishing a Landing Zone and transferring patients. An actual Mid-State call review will be included in this program. This program will be presented at the St. Luke’s campus (Boyle Board room and Heli-pad). CME hours 3 BLS
Treating burn patients June 15, 2011
Staff from the Clark Burn Center (SUNY Upstate) will provide this informative and up-to-date presentation on current burn patient treatment. The presentation will review both BLS and ALS burn care will include the most current treatments at the burn center. A case review will include pre-hospital, emergency department, burn unit and rehab care. CME hours 1.5 BLS 1.5 ALS
Before you know it the Great Midstate 2010 Awards Banquet will be here. Just 44 days (may 1st) to get your nominations in and only 64 days (may 20th) till the big event. This year we have a bigger venue at Vernon Downs so hopefully we won’t have to turn people away again. So let’s start sending in those nominations. You know you want to. FSLH and Utica College to Host Stroke Education Day
Wednesday, April 27, 2011 8am to 4pm Hart’s Hill Inn, 135 Clinton Street, Whitesboro.
Physicians, nurses, therapists, students and anyone involved in the healthcare field are welcome to attend Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare’s (FSLH) and Utica College’s Stroke Education Day.
Speakers include Gregory E. Young, MD, FACEP, associate commissioner and medical director for the New York State Department of Health’s Western Region; Cynthia Bautista, PhD, RN, CNRN, CCNS, ACNS-BC, neuroscience clinical nurse specialist at Yale New Haven Hospital; FSLH’s Kevin Hoehn, PharmD, MBA, CGP, BCPS, clinical pharmacy coordinator; and stroke survivor Mary Rogers.
The event is free for Utica College and FSLH students and employees. All other tickets are $40 per person. Breakfast and lunch will be served. Reservations must be made by Wednesday, April 13, 2011.
